The Liquid Helium Crisis

Responding to the U.S. Research Community’s Liquid Helium Crisis

The CSMC Faculty member, Sophia Hayes served on the committee spearheaded by the American Physical Society (APS), the Materials Research Society (MRS) and the American Chemical Society (ACS) to address the rising cost of helium and unreliable availability. The committee released a report in October that maps steps necessary to save research fields that are dependent on helium for survival. The ACS, APS and MRS also launched a website to help researchers identify and transition to new technologies that would reduce their helium consumption.

“When you confront large helium price increases, it’s hard to adjust on a fixed research budget. You have to cover your bills, so you take the money out of your summer salary, and you cut back on the number of graduate students you can hire.” - Sophia Hayes
