CSMC Returns to the Lane Country Fair STEM Festival

The CSMC returned to the Lane County Fair this year to join other outreach groups for the 2016 STEM Festival. CSMC students brought a variety of engaging, hands-on demos to teach visitors about Center research on thin film chemistry. These demos are a result of a partnership between the CSMC and the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), which focuses on communicating science to the public. Two of the newest demos to come out of this program are “Small clusters make smoother thin films” and “From beaker to smart phone: the chemistry of the thin-film transistor.” The first demo explains how clusters can make smooth, thin films and ultimately improve device performances. The second demo explains how thin-film transistors are made using lithography. The crowd favorite, however, was the thin film paint demo, which explains the differences between spin-coating and vacuum deposition of thin films.

Look for us again at the Lane County Fair STEM Festival next year, and thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers!
